Daniel W. Stevens

Daniel Webster Stevens, born in the Town of Knox in 1884, died Saturday, December 19. He was one of 12 children born to Clarence and Elizabeth Saddlemire Stevens.

The early part of Webb's life was spent working at what was then known as the speculating business - buying meat and produce from farmers and peddling it in cities with a horse and wagon. Later he changed to the Model T. Ford, which also served as the "Jitney," carrying Know residents to and from the train station in Altamont.

In 1931 he purchased what was then the village blacksmith's shop in Knox, remodeling it into a home and opening a gas station where he lived until the time of his death. Many area residents can recall stopping in to have a soda or ice cream, and meeting Webb and friends on the front porch.
