Birth

Peter Ives Deitz was born on Apr 15, 1791 at Beaverdam, Town of Knox, Albany, NY. His parents were Col. Johan Jost Dietz (Sep 19, 1760-1841) and Eva Hilts (Sep 1, 1763-Dec 11, 1820). He was the fourth of six children.

Occupation

Peter was a farmer. He was given 50 acres of the original farm from his father, Col.Johan Jost Dietz, in 1813. And in 1820, another 50 acres of the farm in Beaverdam, Town of Berne, Albany, NY. Peter Ives recieved that part of the farm to the east of the Col. Dietz house across a stream called the Dietz Kill on an early farm survey, where he built a barn and the original part of the present Descartes house about 1835. Some brick was used, and that year brick from the Col. Dietz farm was used to build the new St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Bernville. A stone mill pond dam on the Dietz Kill between the two houses provided power for a saw mill. Peter's son, Abraham Dietz, recieved this farm before 1854. The town line between Knox and Berne separated the two farms.

Peter Ives Deitz married Elizabeth Haverly, daughter of Christian Haverly and Eva Kniskern, on Nov 11, 1809 at Berne, Albany, NY. Peter Ives Deitz and Elizabeth Haverly had the following fourteen children:

  • Eve Deitz-b.Aug 15, 1810 at probably,Town of Knox, Albany, NY. She was baptised on Sep 2, 1810 at the Lutheran Church, Town of Berne,Albany, NY. She married Peter Bassler Jr. before 1833. She died on Apr 30, 1887 at West Berne, Albany, NY, at age 76. She was buried at Beaverdam Cemetery, Berne , Albany, NY. She and Peter Bassler Jr. appeared on the census of 1850 at the Town of Middleburgh, Schoharie, N.Y. and on the census of 1855 and 1870 at the Town of Berne, Albany, NY. She and Peter Bassler Jr. appeared on the census of 1880 at the Town of Berne, Albany, NY.
  • John P Deitz-b.Dec 24, 1812 at Berne, Albany, NY. He was baptised in 1815 at the Reformed Church, Town of Berne, Albany, NY.
  • Mary Elizabeth Deitz-b.Dec 18, 1814 at Berne, Albany, NY. She married Joseph I. Schultes. She died in Mar 1866 at Town of Berne, Albany, NY, at age 51. She was buried at Joseph I. Schultes Family Burying Ground, Switzkill Road, Town of Berne, Albany, NY. She and Joseph I. Schultes appeared on the census of 1850 at the Town of Berne, Albany, NY.
Miner Deitz was the child of John Johann Jost P Dietz born on 12 - Jul - 1817 at Schoharie Schoharie Co NY died at Berne Albany Co NY on 5 - Mar - 1872 and his ( 1st ) wife Anna Maria Bassler born on 9 - Apr - 1815 at NY died at Berne Albany Co NY on 16 - Apr - 1889 married on 4 - Jan - 1838 married at Berne Albany Co NY (DAR)
  • Abraham Lawyer Deitz-b.Jun 11, 1819 at Berne, Albany, NY. He died on Mar 5, 1880 at age 60.
  • Caroline Deitz-b.Nov 9, 1821 at Berne, Albany, NY. She was baptised on Jan 1, 1822 at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Town of Berne, Albany, NY. She married Johannes Frederich Beller Sr. on Mar 12, 1840 at the Reformed Church, Berne, Albany, NY. She died on Dec 26, 1861 at Middleburgh, Schoharie, NY, at age 40.   • William Deitz-b. Sep 2, 1832 at Berne, Albany, NY. He married Julia E.Case on Feb 1, 1854 at Oneonta, Otsego, NY. He died at Shurburn, Otsego, NY.
  • Sarah Matilda Deitz-b. Aug 23, 1834, at Berne, Albany,NY. She married Robert Richter. She married Jacob Levi Schermerhorn on Oct 6, 1860 at the Lutheran Church, Berne, Albany, NY.She died on Oct 5, 1896 at age 62. She was buried at Lake Rural Cemetery, East Berne, Albany,NY.   • Rebecca Deitz-b. Dec 22, 1836, at Berne, Albany, NY. She married James Burk. She died 1910. She was buried at the Old Stone Fort Cemetery, Schoharie, Schoharie, NY.
  • Baby Deitz-b. Aug 22, 1839 at Berne, Albany, NY. She died circa 1839.

Death

Peter Ives Deitz died on Apr 6, 1855 at probably Middleburgh, Schoharie, NY, at age 63. He appeared in the census of 1850 without his wife in the household of his daughter Caroline's in-law's Johannes Friederich Beller Sr. and Catherine Beller at Middleburgh, Schoharie, NY. However, The Schoharie County Historical Society has no record of his burial in that county. Peter's wife, Elizabeth was buried in the Peter Deitz Farm Burying Ground when she died in 1842, and he probably was also although no marker is evident today.
