KIWANIS CLUB OF THE HELDERBERGS GETS ITS CHARTER

One hundred eighty Kiwanians and guests attended the Charter Night for the Kiwanis Club of the Helderbergs, at Berne last Friday evening.

A social hour was enjoyed from 6:30 to 7 o’clock at the Berne Hotel, followed by a dinner meeting at Foxenkill Grange hall.

The following gifts were presented to the new club: A dinner banner from Western Turnpike, by Frank Staucet, president: lapel badges from Latham by Ned Pitkin, president: a rostrum from Delmar, by John Geurtze, president: Kiwanis road sign, from Albany, by Al Worsdell, president: plastic dinner tickets from Colonie-Albany, by Robert Dean, first vice-president: president’s manual and kit, from Altamont, by Douglas Spoore, president: gong and gavel, from New Scotland, by Wyman Osterhout, president: Kiwanis club banner, American and Canadian flags, presented by Past New York District Governors, Joseph Bennett, Walter o. Lloyd and Lawrence Hall: secretary’s kit by Past Lieutenant Governor Lauren Kisselburg.

The charter was presented by Past New York District Governor Harold White, in the absence of District Governor Charles Wall. The charter was accepted by President W. L. Deats, and the gifts by Vice Presidents Robert Day and Kenneth Atkins.

Entertainment was furnished by the music department of the Berne-Knox Central school. Group singing was led by Phil McCann and William Childs of the New Scotland club.

A ribbon was presented to the New Scotland club for the formation of a new club, the 302nd club in the New York district, and the first new club in the Capital Division in 10 years. The invocation was given by the Rev. George W. Berens, of Berne Reformed church.

Past district officers attending included: Immediate Past District Governor Joseph Bennett, Poughkeepsie; Past Governors Harold White, Delmar; Lawrence Hall, Schenectady, and Walter O. Lloyd, Poughkeepsie; District Secretary Charles F. Rand, North Tonawanda.

Also Past Lieutenant Governors Henry Martin, Albany; Harry Witten(?), Western Turnpike, Henry C. Gates, Albany; Lester Coughtry, Albany; Henry Ilnick, Schoharie; Lauren Kisselburg, New Scotland. Also, Lieutenant Governor of the Mohawk Division, Joseph McGish attended, with members of the Mayfair-Burnt Hills and Schenectady clubs.

Twelve Kiwanis clubs were represented from three divisions, Mohawk, Capital, and Hudson River. A message, “The Challenge of Kiwanis,” was given by New York District Secretary Charles F. Rand.
