3rd Infantry Regiment
This regiment was accepted by the State April 25, 1861; received its numerical designation May 7, 1861; was organized at Albany, and there mustered in the service of the United States for two years May 14, 1861.
The regiment fought in the Battle of Drewry's Bluff and was then transferred to the 3d brigade, 3d division, l8th corps, which moved to Cold Harbor, where it was active until June 12, when it returned to Bermuda Hundred.
The Battle of Drewry's Bluff/Fort Darling (Second) was fought from May 12-16, 1864 in Chesterfield County, Virginia. 422 men were killed, 2,380 were wounded and 210 died from other causes.
Among the 422 who were killed, was:
- John West of Company K, a 19 year old Private from Rensselaerville was killed on May 16, 1864 at Drewry's Bluff, VA. John left behind his parents, a brother who was also a soldier who later died, and a sister.
Among those who were wounded was:
- Isaac M. Dietz from Berne, was a 29 year old Private of Company G who was wounded on June 16, 1864 at Drewry's Bluff, VA and later discharged for his disability.
Among those who died from other causes:
- Herbert Knowles of Westerlo, a 27 year old Private of Company F died of disease on July 2, 1864 at Fortress Monroe, VA. He left a widow and a small child.
Among those disabled:
- Erastus Gibbons Jr. of Westerlo was an 19 year old Private of Company D who suffered a hernia and was discharged on April 24, 1862 for his disability.
- Joseph Addison McNary a native of Berne was a 19 year old Private of Company F who was taken ill at Fortress Monroe and removed to Fort McHenry at Baltimore, MD where his was discharged for his disability on June 9, 1862. He was never again able to resume his previous occupation and eventually died of a lung related disease.
