Instructions for Entering Service Personnel
Information that would be useful in a biography includes
- Photo
- Birth (date, place, parents)
- Education
- Military Service
- Marriage and Children
- Occupation
- Death (date and burial)
- Obituary
- Other Media (newspaper articles, service papers, obituary, etc.)
- Gallery (photos)
Instructions
1. Create the biography page
- a. Click on the Hilltown Biographies link in the column at the left of the page
- b. Click on Create A Biography
- c. Select the Civil War Template for Civil War Soldiers - otherwise select the top Biography Template
- d. Enter the name of the soldier: First Name Middle Name or Initial Last Name
- e. Click Create Page
2. Add information
- a. All possible categories are listed at the bottom of the template. Delete the categories that do not apply to your individual. One individual may have lived in more than one town and fought in more than one war.
- b. Enter information under the appropriate headings for your individual
- c. Click Save at the bottom of the page and preview your work
- d. Click Edit in the top menu bar to make corrections and add more data.
3. Rename your individual
- a. Click the down arrow to the right of View History in the top menu bar

Please add a name to the veteran list in alphabetical order. To do so, first register then sign in. You will see an Edit tab to the top right on a page veterans for a specific war in a specific town. Click on "Edit" and enter a name in the sample format shown below. Go the bottom of this page and click Show Preview. The name should then appear in red. If it looks OK, go to the bottom of the page again and click on Save Page. If you click on the name you can then add a biography. You need not write a biography to add a name to the list.

- Go to the town page and the Military History section
- Go to the page for the war in which the veteran served
- go to edit tab
- towards the bottom of the page is the Edit panel
- Under ==Service Personnel== you will put the person's name in alphabetical order, last name first
- start the line with an * followed by [[, then the person's last name, fist name, middle initial and ending with ]] as follows *[[Doe, John Q.]]

- click on Preview on bottom of page to preview what the page will look like. The person's name should be in red with a "Bullet" before it like this
- Last, First MI
- if it looks correct then add another name, if you have one to add
- when you are done, Preview and Save.
- click on the persons name in red that you have added to start their biography. You will be taken to a new page with that person's name at the top.
- copy the following outline and paste it on the person's new biography page
Other Media
This is the place to either add a transcription of a document or an image of a document.
- For a transcription, put the name of the source below ==Other Media== between a set of triple = signs like this example:

- Then add the transcription, or go to the left column to Upload File to add an image of the article that you have previously saved to your computer. For instructions on uploading images you should add a Gallery in which to place the images. See Instructions for Editing Hilltown Landscapes. for how to add a Gallery and upload images to it.
Once you have added a transcription or a Gallery of one or more images:
- click on Preview on bottom of page to preview what the page will look like.
- if it looks correct then go to Upload File for another image if appropriate.
- every page must have one or more Categories. For these biographies there are four that should be added in the panel on the last line are as follows:
[[Categrory:Biography ]] [[Category:{town}]][[Category:Military]] [[Category:{war}]]
- Copy and past the line above and past it in the biography as the last line.
- change {town} to: Berne, Knox, Westerlo, or Rensselaerville
- change {war} to: Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Civil War, World War I, World War II, Korean Conflict, Vietnam War
- when you are done, click on Preview at the bottom of the page; if it looks correct then click on Save.
