Birth

Erna I. Weatherwax was born May 26, 1908 in Charleston Four Corners, the daughter of Russell and Nettie (Schoonmaker) Weatherwax. Her siblings were:

  • Mrs. Ethel Hohenstein of Guilderland;
  • Laverne Weatherwax, Sr., of Sungerlands;

Erna Weatherwax had lived most of her life in the Town of Knox before moving to Unadilla (hometown of her son Lewis W. Sturgess) seven years ago. She was employed by the state income tax bureau in Albany, from which she retired as principal account, clerk. She was a charter member of the now-defunct Helderberg Grange chapter and a member of the Dutch Reformed Church of Altamont.

Erna Sturgess Is Dead At 74

Mrs. Erna Weatherwax Sturgess of 20 Maple Ave., Unadilla, formerly.of Knox, died unexpectedly Thursday, Dec. 23 (1982) at The Hospital, Sidney (Delaware Co.). She was 74.

Mrs. Sturgess was born May 26, 1908 in Charleston Four Corners, the daughter of Russell and Nettie (Schoonmaker) Weatherwax. She was married to Earl J. Sturgess, May 20,1930 in Albany.

She had lived most of her life in the Town of Knox before moving to Unadilla seven years ago. She was employed by the state income tax bureau in Albany, from which she retired as principal account, clerk. She was a charter member of the now-defunct Helderberg Grange chapter and a member of the Dutch Reformed Church of Altamont.

Survivors include her husband; a son, Lewis W. Sturgess of Unadilla; a daughter. Dr. Jeanette Lamb of Traverse City, Mich.; a sister, Mrs. Ethel Hohenstein of Guilderland; a brother, Laverne Weatherwax, Sr., of Sungerlands; seven grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, aii aunt, and several nieces and nephews.

Private funeral and committal services were held 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 26 at Wescott Funeral Home, Unadilla, with Rev. Richard Breuninger, associate pastor, First United Methodist Church, Oneonta, officiating. Burial will be in Knox Cemetery, Knox.
