Military
Wayne Gaige served in the United States Army in Germany during World War II. A World War II veteran, he entered the Army in May 1944 and served with the 787th tank battalion, 7th Army, in Europe.
Occupation
Wayne C. Gaige worked as a cook on an iron ore freighter on the Great Lakes for several years prior to becoming an inspector for the New York State Health Department. He then operated the R&W Tavern in Schenectady while also dealing in antiques.

SCHENECTADY — Wayne C. Gaige, 81, died Friday, March 22, 2002 at St. Clare's Hospital in Schenectady following a long illness. Mr. Gaige was born in Altamont and graduated from the former Altamont High School in 1938. He served in the United States Army in Germany during World War II. He worked as a cook on an iron ore freighter on the Great Lakes for several years prior to becoming an inspector for the New York State Health Department. He then operated the R&W Tavern in Schenectady while also dealing in antiques.
He was a member of the Helderberg Post #977 American Legion in Altamont and was a member of the of the Guilderland Historical Society and was an avid NASCAR race fan.
Two wives, Beverly Kapples Gaige and Eileen Fisher Gaige, died before him.
He is survived by five children, Sara (Josie) LaFave of Philadelphia, N.Y., John K. Gaige of Theresa, N.Y., Mary Wooderson of Henrietta, N.Y., W. Charles Gaige of North Tonawanda, N.Y., and William Gaige of South Carolina. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 12 greatgrandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. A son, Thomas E. Gaige, and two brothers, Harry E. Gaige and James W. Gaige, died before him.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 6, at the Fredendall Funeral Home at 199 Main Street in Altamont. Memorial contributions may be made to the Capitaland Dialysis Center, 600 McClellan St., Schenectady, NY 12304.

Wayne C. Gaige, 81, of 328 Frank St., Schenectady, formerly of Clayton and Philadelphia, died Friday in St. Clare's Hospital, Schenectady, after a long illness.
Mr. Gaige was a cook in many restaurants and also for several years on iron ore freighters on the Great Lakes.
Born Aug. 17, 1920, in Altamont, son of Harry and Ismay Watson Gaige, he graduated in 1938 from Altamont High School. He married Beverly Kapples of Clayton on Aug. 10, 1940. The marriage ended in divorce.
A World War II veteran, he entered the Army in May 1944 and served with the 787th tank battalion, 7th Army, in Europe. He later married Eileen Fisher of Schenectady. She died in 1986.
Surviving are two daughters, Sara J. "Josie" LaFave, Philadelphia, and Mrs. Lynn (Mary E.) Wooderson, Henrietta; three sons, John K., Theresa, W. Charles, North Tonawanda, and William A., South Carolina; 12 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A son, Thomas E. "Tom-Ed," died Sept. 1, 1991.
The body was cremated. A memorial service will be in April in Altamont.
Arrangements were with Fredendall Funeral Home, Altamont.
Donations may be made to Activity Fund, Carthage Area Hospital Skilled Nursing Unit.
