Mary Elizabeth Stevens was born in Knox in 1913, and lived there for more than 94 years. She was the daughter of Lucius Stevens ( - 3/19/1967) and Pearl Mae Elsass Stevens (- 12/14/1965).

In addition to her work on the family farm, Liz did seasonal work at the New York State Department of Taxation. She was employed as a cashier and checked the pool temperature at the John Boyd Thacher State Park. She worked as a waitress at the Merrymans Tea Room in Knox. She also worked as a cook at several locations including a local rest home and the Altamont Manor. She loved the color of purple. She was a member of many local organizations including the Knox Republican Club. She served as the registrar of vital statistics for the Town of Knox. She was a member of the Knox Historical Society and the Knox Ladies. She held the office of trustee for three years with the Knox Historical Society.

She has been a member of the Knox Reformed Church for more than 80 years. Liz was an independent woman known for her wonderful baking skills and fine meals. She could make something delicious from very few ingredients. She enjoyed her home, her garden, canning and sewing. She had an incredible memory and could entertain with stories of past events, including food, weather, and the people who attended. She was also known for her love of animals. She enjoyed many pets during her life, including her faithful dog Major.

KNOX (Mary) Elizabeth Stevens passed away on January 31, 2012. She was born in Knox, and lived there for more than 94 years. She lost her beloved parents, Pearl Mae Elsass Stevens on 12/14/1965 and Lucius Stevens on 3/19/1967. She had a long and interesting life. In addition to her work on the family farm, Liz did seasonal work at the New York State Department of Taxation. Pinchback, Ron Quay, Sandra Quay, Wallace Quay Jr., Brad Stevens, Emma Stevens, Ron Taylor, Sharlene Vanderbilt, Reverend Ed and Janet VanKampen, Kathy and Carl Walls, and Shirley Willsie.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 4, 2012 at the Knox Reformed Church. Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, February 3, 2012 at the Fredendall Funeral Home, Altamont. She will be interred in the spring with her parents in the family plot in the Knox Rural Cemetery. Note: Russell Elsass was the brother of Michael Elsass and so the uncle of Pearl Mea Elsass (Mrs. Lucius Stevens), so it makes sense he is on the Stevens' grave stone.

The funeral of Russell Elsass was held from Brunk Funeral Home on Monday. Russell was a former resident of the town of Knox and had spent the last few years in Rome..
