Sornberger, Alexander
Birth
Alexander Sornberger was born in 1827 in Schoharie County, NY to Seymour Sornberger Sr. (B. March 23, 1805, D. March 16, 1879) and his wife Sarah Hallenbeck (b. Aug 17, 1805,d. Nov 27, 1878).[1][2] Their surname has been spelled in a multitude of ways, making it difficult to research them.

- second syllable: burger, borger
Alexander's father was a very successful man having been a Judge of Sessions in Schoharie County as well as a State Representative from Schoharie County in 1852.[3][4][5] Alexander had several siblings including:
- Lawrence Sornberger (B. abt 1837).[6][7]
- Lydia Sornberger Simkins (B. 1838).[6][7]
- Hannah Sornberger (B. 1841))[6]
- Seymour Sornberger Jr. (B. 1843, D. 1873)*[2][6][7]
- Charlotte Sornberger Bell (B. abt 1847, D. >1870)[8][9] Appears to be the daughter of Alexander and Susan as opposed to the sister of Alexander.
Marriage & Children
Alexander married a woman named Susan, who was born in 1819 or 1820 and thus was about a decade older than he.[8][10] They had the following known children:

Occupation
Alexander was a blacksmith and this was a family trade practiced by his father Seymour Sornberger, Uncle Aaron Sornberger and his brother Lawrence Sornberger.[7][8][10]
Life
I have not found Alexander in the 1850 or 1860 censuses, however his parents and siblings can be found in these censuses living in Franklinton, Broome Twp, Schoharie Co, NY.[6] >[7] In the 1870 US Census, Alexander and Susan were living in Westerlo with his sister Charlotte Sornberger Bell and her son Ernest Bell.[8] Alexander was working as a blacksmith.[8] By the 1880 Census, Alexander had moved back to Franklinton and was living with his sister Lydia Simkins and her family, and next to his brother Lawrence. Alexander and Lawrence were both recorded as blacksmiths.[10] On March 1, 1890, Alexander filed for his Civil War pension.[13] He was later recorded in the 1890 US Veterans Census in Broome, Schoharie County. This record confirms his service in the 91st regiment and said he was suffering from rheumatism.[14] No record has been found for Alexander after this date.
Death
Alexander died in 1905.[15]
