Birth

Charles M. Simpson was born August 10, 1912, in Norton Hill to the late Thomas Simpson and Maude Cameron.

Occupation

He operated the Colonial Manor summer resort in South Westerlo for over 29 years.

Marriage & Children

Charles married Amelia (Millie) and they had a daughter, Gail Simpson, both of whom predeceased him.

Military Service

Charles served in the Rhineland and Central Europe. He received the American Service Medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.

Death

Charles died on January 15, 1996, at his home in South Westerlo at 83 years of age.

Burial

He was buried the following Spring in Greenville Cemetery.[2]

WESTERLO - Charles M. Simpson, 83, died Monday at his home in South Westerlo. He was born August 10, 1912 in Norton Hill, son of the late Thomas and Maude (Cameron) Simpson. Charles and his late wife, Amelia (Millie) Simpson had operated the Colonial Manor summer resort in South Westerlo for over 29 years. A veteran of World War II, he served in the Rhineland and Central Europe and received the American Service Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. He was a member and past commander of the Greenville American Legion Post 291, a member and Past Master of James Austin Lodge 557, F&AM, a member of the Christ Episcopal Church in Greenville, the Scottish Rites 32 Degree Masons in Albany, the Cyprus Temple Shriners of Albany, and the Royal Order of Jesters Court 77 of Albany. He had also been a justice of the peace and dog warden for the town of Westerlo; a past member of the Westerlo Volunteer Fire Co., a member of the Norton Hill Wildlife Club, the Was-Ha-Gaen Club and a life member of the East Durham Fire Company. Survivors include his loving friend, Evelyn Mans of South Westerlo; several cousins and dear friends. A daughter, Gail Simpson, is deceased. The Rev. T. Kyle Grennen and the Rev. Charles Rice Jr. officiated at funeral services this morning from the Cunningham Funeral Home in Greenville. The Westerlo Fire Company, Post 291 and Lodge 557 conducted services last night. Burial will be in the spring in Greenville Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Westerlo Volunteer Fire Co. WESTERLO Charles M. Simpson, 83, of South Westerlo died Monday at his home. Mr. Simpson was born in Norton Hill, Greene County. He was a World War II Army veteran. He operated the Colonial Manor summer resort in South Westerlo for more than 29 years. Mr. Simpson was a former Westerlo town justice and dog warden. He was a past member of the Westerlo Volunteer Fire Company and a life member of the East Durham Volunteer Fire Company. He was a member and past commander of the Greenville American Legion Post 291 and a member and past master of the James Austin Masonic Lodge 557. He was a member of the Scottish Rite 32nd Degree Masons in Albany, the Cyprus Temple Shriners of Albany, the Royal Order of Jesters Court 77 of Albany, the Norton Hill Wildlife Club and the Was-Ha-Gaen Club. He was a communicant of Christ Episcopal Church, Greenville, Greene County. A service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Cunningham Funeral Home, Greenville. Spring burial will be in Greenville Cemetery. Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home.
