Birth

Born in Albany December 23, 1925, Mr. Lynch was son of the late John and Catherine Dunleavy Lynch.

Education

He was a graduate of Hudson Valley Community College in 1978.

Marriage and Children

John married first the late Coleen Womer. He married, secondly, Joyce Tucker. He is the father of Kathleen Lynch.

Occupation

Mr. Lynch joined the Albany Police Force in 1947, serving in the uniform and the detective ranks and officer in charge of the night squad. He retired from the Albany Police Department in 1988 as detective captain.

Military Service

Mr. Lynch was a Navy veteran of World War II serving aboard the USS Stewart as a Radarman receiving the American-European and Asiatic Theater of War Medals, Occupation of the Philippines and Victory Medal.

Death

John died Sunday, January 18, 2004, at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany, New York, after a long illness.

Burial

Interment, St. Agnes Cemetery, on January 22, 2004.

Obituary COLONIE -- John F. Lynch, 78, of Colonie, formerly of East Berne, died Sunday, January 18, 2004 at St. Peter's Hospital after a long illness. Born in Albany December 23, 1925, Mr. Lynch was son of the late John and Catherine Dunleavy Lynch. Upon discharge from the Navy in 1947, Mr. Lynch joined the Albany Police Force serving in the uniform and the detective ranks and officer in charge of night squad. He was a graduate of Hudson Valley in 1978 and retired from the Albany Police Department in 1988 as detective captain. At his retirement, the late Mayor Whelan proclaimed February 20, 1988 as John F. Lynch Day. He received first honors of the Zone Five Regional Law Enforcement Academy at a luncheon on February 25, 1988. John was a member of the AOH and served as treasurer and sentinel. He received Hibernian of the Year award in 1996. He was also a member of the Albany Elks Lodge BPOE #49 and served for a time on their investigative committee. He served for many years as usher at the 7:30 p.m. Mass at St. James Church. Husband of 44 years of Joyce Tucker Lynch. Former husband of the late Coleen Womer Lynch. Father of Kathleen Burt and his favorite son-in-law David. Grandfather of Maureen and Lindsay Burt. Also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins in American and Ireland. Funeral services will be held Thursday morning 10:30 at St. James Church. Relatives and friends are invited and may also call at the Magin & Keegan Funeral Home, 891 Madison Ave., Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. If desired, contributions in Mr. Lynch's memory may be made to the Kateri Tekawitha Shrine, P.O.
