Birth

Lewis E. Haverly was born on February 1, 1900, the son of William J. Haverly and Carrie Naughright.

Occupation

Lewis was a farmer and also owned and operated a saw mill in West Berne for many years. He also served on the school board for many years during the 1950's and 1960's.

Lewis married Betty Smith on October 25, 1935. They had the following children:

Death

He died on September 19, 1991, and is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Berne.

Obituary

Funeral services were held at Fredendall Funeral Home Sunday afternoon for Lewis E. Haverly who died last Thursday in Eden Park Nursing Home, Cobleskill, after a long illness. Officiating was the Rev. Robert Hoffman with closing prayer by nephew Rev. Franklin B. Deitz.

Born Feb. 1, 1900, the son of William J. and Carrie Nauright Haverly, he was the youngest of nine children. Lewis Haverly was the brother of the late Edwin Haverly; Mae (Mrs. Edward) Manchester; Elmina (Mrs. Frank) Van Schoick; Theodora (Mrs. Fred N.) Deitz; Nellie (Mrs. Lloyd) Sisson; Anna (Mrs. Harry) Kniffen; John Haverly; and Hazel (Mrs. Paul) Schoonmaker. He was the husband of the late Betty Smith Haverly who died in February 1985.

He was the lifelong resident of West Berne where he grew up in the Beaverdam Reformed Church and to later life he remained faithful in his Bible reading. He ran the family farm and owned and operated a sawmill on the Foxenkill near his home. At one time he was also the co-owner of the Log House Motel which he built in Sharon Springs.

Haverly served with the fire police of the Berne Fire Co. and on the Berne-Knox Central School Board of Education and continued as donor of the annual French Regents June Award. He was a 70-year member of the Berne Lodge No. 684 F & AM who held a memorial service earlier Sunday afternoon.

Survivors include two sons, Ronald L. Haverly of Wilmington, Del. and Mitchell B. Haverly of West Berne; a daughter Marilyn (Mrs. Edward) Nicholson of Knox and six grandchildren - Martin Haverly, senior at the Dickinson Law School, Carlyle, Penn; Gordon Haverly, communications student at Messiah College, Grantham Penn; Karen Nicholson, a senior chemistry student at Vassar College, Poughkeepsie; Erin Nicholson, a Siena College sophomore; and Andrew and David Haverly of West Berne.

Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Berne Ambulance Fund.
