Alton H. Gibbs was born Jan. 31,1918, in Knox, son of the late Harrison Benjamin (Harry) Gibbs and Vertie Clow Gibbs. His siblings were:

In 1958 Alton Gibbs moved to Dutchess County, where for many years he was head of the printing department of the Arlington School District in Poughkeepsie, retiring in 1982.

Marriage & Children

Alton H. Gibbs married the former Anne Laurel Brenner on June 8,1958, in Poughkeepsie. Anne died June 21, 1997. Their children were:

  • Philip Gibbs of Schenectady
  • Roger Gibbs of Brant Lake (Warren Co.)
  • Dennis Gibbs of Knox
  • Donna Raplee of Johnson City (Broome Co.);

HYDE PARK — Alton H. Gibbs, 83, of Hyde Park, died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, at Northern Dutchess Hospital in Rhinebeck (Dutchess Co.)

Mr. Gibbs was born Jan. 31,1918, in Knox, son of the late Harry and Vertie Clow Gibbs. In 1958 he moved to Dutchess County, where for many years he was head of the printing department of the Arlington School District in Poughkeepsie, retiring in 1982. An enthusiastic gardener, he particularly enjoyed growing roses and sharing them with neighbors and friends. He was an usher and active member of the Usher Committee at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Rhinebeck.

Survivors include a sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Sidney LaGrange of Ramseur, N.C.; a sister-in-law, Marion Gibbs of Berne; three sons: Philip Gibbs of Schenectady, Roger Gibbs of Brant Lake (Warren Co.), Dennis Gibbs of Knox; a daughter, Donna Raplee of Johnson City (Broome Co.); and several grandchildren and greatgranchildren. His wife, the former Anne Laurel Brenner, whom he married on June 8,1958, in Poughkeepsie, died June 21,1997. A brother, Francis Gibbs, is also deceased.

Services were Feb. 7 from St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Burial was in the family plot at Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul's (Wurtemburg) Evangelical Lutheran Church, 361 Wurtemburg Road, Rhinebeck, NY 12572.
