Birth

Lewis Fowler was born in the State of New Jersey in the month of May of 1762. [1] His parents names were not provided.

Military

He resided at a place called Orangetown, which was then Orange County but is now Rockland County, NY when he entered the service at about age 15 or 16 in the year 1778, and was first employed as an artificer and did blacksmithing at Station #2 at Peekskill. He again enlisted as a private and was at Stony Point under the command of General Anthony Wayne. He also served under Captain Brown in Col. Harris’ Regiment. He was a Private in the Dragoons or Calvary under Capt. Rudolph’s command until 1782.

Marriage and Children

At about 1784 Lewis married Hannah Vandervoort[1] who was born on March 27, 1766. Their known children:

  • Samuel Fowler b. about 1789 [2]
  • Peter Fowler b. April 10, 1792[1]
  • Martha Fowler b. July 27, 1795 [2]
  • Hannah Fowler b. June 19, 1796[2]
  • Mary Fowler b. about 1799 in East Berne, NY[2]
  • Rebecca Fowler b. about 1809 at East Berne, NY[2]

Death

Lewis died on January 31, 1834 and was buried at the Lake Rural Cemetery in Berne. Hannah died on February 27, 1847 and was buried beside Lewis and near several of their children. [2]

His pension file contained affidavits from some very well known and respected people, Corporal Robert Livingston, Paul Hochstrasser, Andrew Secor and Richard Filkins.
