Obituary Westerlo--Robert W. Cooper, a decorated veteran and a long-time supermarket manager, died unexpectedly at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany on August 23. A Westerlo resident, he was 79. Mr. Cooper was born in Jersey City, New Jersey on April 10, 1926, the son of the late Henry and Alice (Risen) Cooper. He was a retired manager for A&P Supermarkets, having managed stores in Elsmere, Coxsackie, and Ravena. Mr. Cooper was a highly decorated veteran. During World War II, he served in the United States Army in Central Europe and the Rhineland. He received the Bronze Star Medal, the European Eastern Campaign Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. His unit, Co. A, 778th Tank Battalion, received a Unit Citation for its part in repelling the German 82nd Corps offensive to retain vital ground near Lampaden. The citation read: "On 6 March 1945 to 7 March 1945, these units, exhibiting unwavering fortitude and indomitable tenacity, successfully protected the division bridgehead in the face of overwhelming odds." Mr. Cooper will also be remembered as the Hilltown TV repairman and an active member of the Republican Party and the American Legion. Mr. Cooper is survived by his wife, Marion (Dunbar) Cooper; his son Robert H. Cooper and his wife, Carol, of Westerlo; his son Richard J. Cooper, of Westerlo; his daughter, Gail Bushnell, of Berne; his grandson Wayne Cooper; his granddaughter Lori Gebe and her husband Matthew; his grandson Steven Cooper and his wife, Mary; his grandson Thomas Bushnell; his granddaughter Allison Bushnell; his brother, Edward Cooper, of Virginia; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. His brothers George and John Cooper died before him. A funeral service was held on Saturday, August 27, at the Cunningham Funeral Home in Greenville. Interment was in the Westerlo Rural Cemetery.
