Ethel Mae Snyder BERNE — Ethel Mae Snyder, a devoted mother and a lover of the outdoors, lived in the Hilltowns for nearly a century, raising her family in Berne. Her son, Mitchell Snyder, remembers her as “just a regular mother.” “She was very easy to talk to,” he said, adding, “She was always involved in family activities.” Mrs. Snyder died on July 8, 2012 at St. Peters Hospice Inn in Albany. She was 99. She was born on April 19, 1913 in Berne, the daughter of Charles and Anna (nee Jansen) Adams. Her husband of 64 years, James Snyder, grew up at Snyder’s Corners in Westerlo. They wed on Jan. 2, 1928, and were married until his death in 1992. Mrs. Snyder’s hobbies submerged her in nature, like hunting, fishing, and camping. “They loved the Adirondacks,” Mr. Snyder said of his parents. The family traveled to Saranac Lake; Fish Creek Pond; Lake Sacandaga; Long Lake; Tupper Lake; and Indian Lake. Mrs. Snyder was a skilled hunter. “She picked it up from her father,” her son said. “She hunted a lot before I was born, and she’d go out once in awhile during hunting season.” They often brought home venison. “You never shoot anything you’re not going to eat,” Mr. Snyder said. “That’s the philosophy I was taught.” Mrs. Snyder was an active, lifelong member of the First Reformed Church in Berne; a past matron and member of the Order of the Eastern Star Uhai Chapter 803; a member of the Berne Fire Department Ladies’ Auxilary; a supporter of the Democratic Party; and a supporter of the Red Cross; Mr. Snyder said this week that his mother was instrumental in bringing the first Red Cross Blood Mobile to Berne in the 1960s, to host blood drives. “She was just very involved here,” her son said. “Anything to do with the town of Berne, she was into it.”
Mrs. Snyder is survived by her son, Mitchell; her daughter-in-law, Jane Snyder; and her daughter-in-law, Barbara Snyder. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Michael Snyder and his wife, Vickie; Matthew Snyder and his wife, Lisa; Neil Snyder and his wife, Erin; Andrea Snyder and her husband, Cy; Nelson Snyder; and Luke Snyder and his wife, Samantha. She is also survived by five great-grandchildren. Her son, James Snyder, died in 1983. Friends and family called at Fredendall Funeral Home in Altamont on Wednesday morning, during which the Eastern Star held a service.
