SCHENECTADY — Wayne C. Gaige, 81, died Friday, March 22, 2002 at St. Clare's Hospital in Schenectady following a long illness. Mr. Gaige was born in Altamont and graduated from the former Altamont High School in 1938. He served in the United States Army in Germany during World War II. He worked as a cook on an iron ore freighter on the Great Lakes for several years prior to becoming an inspector for the New York State Health Department. He then operated the R&W Tavern in Schenectady while also dealing in antiques.
He was a member of the Helderberg Post #977 American Legion in Altamont and was a member of the of the Guilderland Historical Society and was an avid NASCAR race fan.
Two wives, Beverly Kapples Gaige and Eileen Fisher Gaige, died before him.
He is survived by five children, Sara (Josie) LaFave of Philadelphia, N.Y., John K. Gaige of Theresa, N.Y., Mary Wooderson of Henrietta, N.Y., W. Charles Gaige of North Tonawanda, N.Y., and William Gaige of South Carolina. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 12 greatgrandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. A son, Thomas E. Gaige, and two brothers, Harry E. Gaige and James W. Gaige, died before him.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 6, at the Fredendall Funeral Home at 199 Main Street in Altamont. Memorial contributions may be made to the Capitaland Dialysis Center, 600 McClellan St., Schenectady, NY 12304.
