James Quay was born on Tuesday, August 25, 1925 in Knox, the son of Daniel Webster Quay who married second Bertha Mae Bradt, the daughter of William J. Bradt and Nellie J. Countryman. His siblings were:

- Helen Quay married Walter A. Coulter - Mrs. Walter (Helen) Coulter

- Donald Quay married Vivian Lorraine Coulter - Donald Quay, Oakdale, Conn.
Daniel Webster Quay married ABT 1879 Idella Batcher, the daughter of Theodore Batcher and Margaret Livingston. His half- siblings were:

D. 1, Altamont, husband of Helen Oliver; father of Marilyn and David Quay; brother of Thaddeus Quay, Donald Quay, Robert Quay, Richard Quay, Mrs. Helen Coulter and Rose Tubbs; half-brother of Edith Nash, Ethel Carey and Arthur Quay. Funeral services were held from the Fredendall Funeral Home, Altamont, Monday, Rev. James J. Reid officiating. Interment was at Memory's Garden.
