Military Experience

Cornelius Steiner enlisted when he was into his 60s despite that the maximum enlistment age was 45 years of age. He gave his date of birth as August 15, 1822 in order to qualify. He enlisted in the same Company and Regiment as his son Chauncey A. Steiner and just days apart. His advanced years made it difficult for him and other older recruits to keep up with the rest of the Regiment. Cornelius spent much of his service as a patient.[1]

Life

Cornelius had a large family and by their early teens several of his sons were living with other families.[6]

On June 19, 1871, Cornelius filed for the Civil War Pension of his son Chauncey A. Steiner.[7]

Death

Cornelius died on July 14, 1880 in Berne, Albany County, NY and was buried at Berne and Beaverdam Cemetery there.[2] His wife Maria died February 24, 1886 in Berne.[2]
