Mr. Crane was a student of Josef Albers at Black Mountain College, formerly in North Carolina, and a graduate of Antioch College and New York University. He was a teacher before his retirement from the New York City public schools. Mr. Crane was a World War II veteran, serving as a weatherman. He lived in a solar home and his interest in nature and conservation led him to become involved in renewable energy, and energy conservation. He also helped establish Biofuels America, a conservation organization. He also enjoyed bird watching, traveling and gardening. Survivors include a sister, Mala Coburn of Doylestown, Pennsylvania.
