Kiwanis builds bluebird houses

Ready to roll: Michael Hammond, left, pushes a load of bluebird houses, steadied by Homer Warner, which the Kiwanis will sell to raise funds for good works. New York's state bird, Sialia sialis, is an edge species whose nesting sites — old woodpecker holes, rock crevices, or hollows of decayed trees — have often been eliminated. Bluebirds will readily take to nesting boxes placed five to 10 feet above the ground at the edge of a forest opening or field.

To the Editor:

The Helderberg Kiwanis Club has launched a major fund-raiser — building bluebird houses — to provide the income for its many projects in the Hilltowns. Locally built by members of the club, it is a complete Hilltown project.

The wood is from the sawmill of the late Rudy Stempel, a longtime member of Kiwanis, and built in the workshop of Mike Hammond,

Kiwnis supports the Berne Memorial Day parade, Knox Little League, and projects connected to the Berne-Knox-Westerlo School District, as well as others too numerous to mention.

Kiwanis members Russ Gladieux, Russ Pokorny, John El berfeld, and myself made birdhouses, and Mike Hammond and Homer Warner moved the completed houses to be distributed for sale

In addition to finished houses, complete kits are available in easy carry-home bags made by Kiwanis members Amy Pokorny and Mary Kinnaird.

Complete houses are available at the Berne Country Store, Altamont Agway, Key Bank, and from any Kiwanis member. They will also be available at the Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast to be held March 25 at the Knox firehouse.

Rudy's spirit is in our hearts

To the Editor:

The Stempel family wish to extend their heartfelt thanks for the generous outpouring of support in so many ways during this time of grieving at losing a very special person in our lives.
Although his physical body is now absent, his spirit lies deeply 1 ingrained in our hearts.
We thank you, one and all, for being there for Rudy. As Rudy always said "Don't be a stranger...."
