Kiwanis Club of the Helderbergs Back to School Project
Helderberg Kiwanis helps Hilltowners
By Zenie Gladieux
HILLTOWNS — The bumper sticker says, "You've got to be tough to live on the Hill!" But members of the Kiwanis Club of the Helderbergs are committed to making life easier for Hilltowns kids. Since March, the club has provided full Easter dinners (with lots of leftovers) to 24 families, handed out over 200 books to young children and the organizations that support them, purchased equipment and supplies for Safe Haven, and provided three more graphing calculators (bringing the total available to 10) to loan to Berne-Knox-Westerlo students taking advanced math.
The latest effort is a back-to-school project: 14 youngsters were adopted by club members and outfitted with new sneakers, backpacks, and all necessary school supplies. Five additional children were given new sneakers.
The Kiwanis Club of the Helderbergs meets most Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. at The Highlands Restaurant on Route 156 in Knox. New members are always welcome; call me at 872-1469 for more information.
