76th Infantry
Cortland Regiment; Cherry Valley Regiment; Otsego County Regiment; Cromwellian Regiment

Mustered in: November 26, 1861 Mustered out: August 23, 1865

The regiment left the State January 17, 1862. It was active at South Mountain and Antietam, its brigade and division having been assigned to the 1st corps, with which it accompanied the cavalry advance through Philomont, Union and Upperville, VA. It participated in the battle of Fredericksburg, went into winter quarters near Falmouth and during the Chancellorsville movement, lost 3 men while guarding bridges. At Gettysburg the regiment took a prominent part and suffered the loss of 234 in killed, wounded and missing.

  • James H. Hammond of Berne was a 21 year old Corporal of Company I who was killed in action at Gettysburg, PA on July 1, 1863.

Among those wounded:

  • Holmes Nelson of Berne was a 22 year old Private of Company I when he was wounded and taken prisoner in August of 1862 at the Battle of Bull Run. He was released on the field and discharged for disability on January 13, 1863 at Washington, DC. The nature of his injury was not given.

Among those captured:

  • Lewis Rivenburg of Rensselaerville was a 35 year old Corporal in Company I when he became disabled and was discharged for his disability on April 22, 1863. He re-enlisted when he recovered, was captured near Petersburg on October 1, 1864 and held prisoner until March 9, 1865. He mustered out on September 4, 1865 at Elmira, NY
