The Iron Hearted Regiment
Mustered in: August 26, 1862 Mustered out: June 17,1865
During its service the regiment lost by death, killed in action, 5 officers, 77 enlisted men; of wounds received in action, 2 officers, 55 enlisted men; of disease and other causes, 191 enlisted men; total, 7 officers, 323 enlisted men; aggregate, 330; of whom 54 enlisted men died in the hands of the enemy; by the explosion of the magazine at Fort Fisher, N. C., January 16, 1865, 10 enlisted men were killed.
Among those wounded:
- William H. Peck a native of Westerlo and a Private of Company K was 36 years old when he was captured on September 15, 1862 at Harper’s Ferry, VA and released the following day and returned to duty. He was wounded in action on February 20, 1864 at Olustee, FL but mustered out with his company on June 17, 1865 at Raleigh, NC. He was married and had 5 children.
