91st Infantry
Albany Regiment; Columbia County Regiment
This regiment was organized at Albany December 16, 1861, by the consolidation of the regiment recruited by Col. David S. Cowles, with the men recruited for the Fredendall Regiment, and the appointment of Jacob Van Zandt as its Colonel. The regiment left the State January 9, 1862; it served at and near Washington, D. C., from January 1862; at Key West, Fort Pickens and Pensacola, Fla., from later in January, 1862; at Baton Rouge, La., from December 19, 1862. It was stationed at Fort Jackson, La., in July, 1863, and was active with heavy loss during the siege of Port Hudson. In the autumn of 1864, it returned to Baltimore, where it was assigned to the 2nd separate brigade, 8th corps. In March, 1865, the regiment, with the exception of one company which remained at Baltimore, was ordered to Petersburg, where it participated in the closing operations of the siege with the 1st brigade, 3d division, 5th corps, and lost 230 in the Appomattox campaign. The regiment was mustered out near Washington, July 3, 1865.
During its service the regiment lost by death, killed in action, 2 officers, 62 enlisted men; of wounds received in action, 2 officers, 48 enlisted men; of disease and other causes, 1 officer, 187 enlisted men; total, 5 officers, 297 enlisted men; aggregate, 302; of whom 2 enlisted men died in the hands of the enemy.
Among those killed in action:
- Cyrus Ostrom of Berne was a 37 year old Private of Company D who was killed in action at Port Hudson, VA on June 14, 1863 and was buried there. He left a widow and 2 small children.
Among the wounded:
- Madison Ball of Berne was a 24 year old Corporal of Company K when he was wounded in the left thigh on July 13, 1863. He was discharged for his disability on December 3, 1864.
- Edmund Bell of Berne was a 26 year old Private of Company E when he was shot through his left lung on May 27, 1863 near Port Gibson, LA. He died of his wounds on June 30, 1863 at Port Hudson, LA.
- Hiram C. Bell of Rensselaerville was a 27 year old Private of Company H when he died on September 24, 1864 at the General Hospital at New Orleans, LA.
- Jacob Decker of Westerlo was a 40 year old Private in Company D when he was wounded in action on June 14, 1863 at Port Hudson, LA. He was discharged for those wounds on March 4, 1864 at Port Jackson, LA. He returned home and died shortly thereafter. He left a widow and 4 children.
- Adam Mathias Haines of Knox was a 26 year old Private of Company K who was wounded in action on June 14, 1863 at Port Hudson, LA. He died of those wounds on June 24, 1863 at New Orleans, LA and is buried in New Orleans.
- William H. Ingalls of Westerlo was a 22 year old Private of Company D when he was wounded in action at Port Hudson, LA on June 14, 1863. He was discharged for those wounds June 29, 1863 at New Orleans, LA
- Lewis L. Slawson of Westerlo was a 23 year old Private of Company H when he was captured in July of 1864 at the Battle of Atlanta and was imprisoned at Andersonville, GA until March of 1865 when he was paroled. He mustered out in June of 1865.
Among the disabled:
- James Adriance of Westerlo was a 20 year old Private of Company D when he was taken ill and sent to a hospital where he remained at the time his company mustered out on July 31, 1865.
- John Michael Bell of Berne was a 32 year old Private Company D when he was discharged for disability on March 1, 1863 at Baton Rouge, LA
- Erskine Chrysler of Knox was a 19 year old Private of Company D who was reportedly absent, sick in the hospital at Washington, DC at the muster out of his company on March 31, 1865. Other sources report his death was on that date.
- John S. Newberry of Berne was a 40 year old Private of Company D when he was taken ill and was not present at the muster out of his company on July 31, 1865.
- Gabriel Henry Secor of Knox was an 18 year old Private of Company D when he was discharged for disability at Key West, FL on April 7, 1862. He re-enlisted in the 61st infantry on August 30, 1862 and at age 19 was wounded in action at Gettysburg, PA and subsequently transferred to 2nd Regt. Veteran Reserve Corps. He mustered out on August 19, 1865.
- Albert Sweet of Rensselaerville was 30 years old and a Corporal of Company E when he was wounded at the battle of Gravely Run. He was in the hospital at the time of his discharge in 1865.
- Peter Winne of Berne was a 35 year old Private of Company D when he was wounded in both thighs. He was discharged for his disability on June 2, 1865 at the Douglas Hospital in Washington, DC. He was a husband and the father of 4 small children.
Among those who died of disease:
- David Bouton of Rensselaerville was a 23 year old Corporal of Company E when he died of typhoid fever on April 26, 1862 at Key West, FL and is buried there.
- Charles F. Bouton of Rensselaerville was a 27 year old Private in Company C when he died of typhoid fever on July 29, 1862 at Pensicola, FL.
- Charles F. Bouton 1830 of Rensselaerville was a 23 year old Private of Company C when he died of typhoid fever on July 29, 1862 at Key West, FL and is buried there.
- William Doty of Rensselaerville was a 27 year old Private of Company E when he died of typhoid fever on March 8, 1865 at the US Army General Hospital at Baltimore, MD. He was buried at the Government Cemetery at Baltimore.
- Amos Gideon Hanes of Knox was a 25 year old Private in Company D when he died of chronic diarrhea at Cairo, IL on July 20, 1864. His remains were returned to Knox where he was buried.
- Gabriel Secor of Knox was a 21 year old Private of Company D who had re-enlisted on January 1, 1864 and died of disease on December 7, 1864 at Fort Federal Hill at Baltimore, MD. He was buried at Loudon National Park Cemetery at Baltimore. Some sources say that his remains were brought home and buried at Berne, NY
- John Snyder of Berne was a 25 year old Private in the 91st Infantry when he died of typhoid fever on November 28, 1864 at Baltimore, MD and was reportedly buried at Port Hudson, LA. Although there are no records to support his enlistment or his death, it was reported on the 1865 census of Berne.
- John Taylor of Berne was a 26 year old Private of Company G when he died of typhoid fever at a hospital in Baltimore, MD. His remains were returned to Berne where he was buried. He left behind a widow.
- Elias Willsey of Berne was a 25 year old Corporal of Company C when he died of disease on May 10, 1865 at the Sixth Army Corps Hospital at City Point, VA. He left a widow and 2 small children.
