177th Infantry, formerly the 10th NY National Guard 

Organized at Albany, N. Y., and mustered in November 21, 1862. Ordered to Department of the Gulf, and left State for New Orleans, LA, on December 16, 1862. Attached to 3rd Brigade, 2nd Division, 19th Army Corps. Department of the Gulf, to July, 1863. 1st Brigade, 3rd Division, 19th Army Corps, to September, 1863. 

SERVICE.-Duty at New Orleans and Carrollton, LA until March, 1863. Scout to Pass Manchac, February 8-11 (Detachment). Advance on [[Ponchatoula]] March 21-24. Expedition to Amite River March 24-30. Duty at [[Bonnet Carre]] till May 7. Expedition to Amite River May 7-19. Action at Civique's Ferry May 10. Moved to Baton Rouge May 20, thence to [[Port Hudson]], LA Siege of Port Hudson May 24-July 9. Assaults on Port Hudson May 27-June 14. Surrender of Port Hudson July 9. Duty at and near Port Hudson till August 22. March to Baton Rouge, thence ordered home for muster out. Mustered out September 10 and discharged September 24, 1863, expiration of term.

Regiment lost during service 2 Officers and 7 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 3 Officers and 149 Enlisted men by disease. Total 161.

*[[David Gathen]] of Rensselaerville was a 22 year old Private of Company C when he was shot in the face and blinded in both eyes at Bonnet Carre, LA on February 6, 1863. He mustered out with the company on September 10, 1863 at Albany, NY

*[[Datus J. Cole]] of Berne was a 26 year old Private of Company G when he died of disease on April 28, 1863 at Bonnet Carre, LA. He was recruited by Morgan Filkins. He left behind a widow.

*[[Jesse Denison]] of Westerlo was a 25 year old Private of Company C who died of typhoid fever on September 2, 1863 at Rochester, NY

*[[Arthur Haswell]] of Knox was a 25 year old Private of Company B who, after 6 months of service, died of disease on April 21, 1863 at Bonnet Carre, LA. He was buried at Albany Rural Cemetery.

*[[Milton Jones]] of Rensselaerville was a 19 year old Private of Company C who was taken ill and died of typhoid fever and chronic diarrhea on July 19, 1863 at Bonnet Carre, LA.

*[[John R. King]] of Berne was a 44 year old Private of Company G who died of typhoid fever on August 5, 1863 at Port Hudson, LA.

*[[Alonzo Grove Ludden]] of Berne was 19 years old and a Corporal Company G when he completed his term of enlistment and mustered out with his company on September 10, 1863 at Albany,NY. A year and a half later, on February 16, 1865, he died of disease acquired in service. He was buried at the Gallupville Cemetery, Schoharie Co., NY.

*[[Homer Snyder]] of Westerlo was a 23 year old Private of Company C when he died of typhoid fever on April 18, 1863 at Bonnet Carre, LA

*[[Daniel Van Deusen]] of Berne was 26 years old and a Private of Company H when he died of chronic diarrhea and typhoid fever on June 16, 1863 near Port Hudson, LA

*[[Thomas Wardrobe]] of Westerlo was a 44 year old Private of Company F when he died of disease in September of 1863 at Cleveland, OH

*[[George H. Warner]] of Berne was a 19 year old Private of Company G who mustered out on September 10, 1863 at Albany and died 18 days later of disease acquired while in the service of his country. He is buried at the Lutheran Church Cemetery in Berne.

*[[Lorenzo Whitting]] of Rensselaerville was a 22 year old Private of Company C who returned with his unit to Albany for muster out and went directly home to Rensselaerville because he was ill. There he died on September 9, 1863 of typhoid fever contracted during his service and was buried at Preston Hollow.

*[[Joel Wilson]] of Berne was a 20 year old Private of Company C when he died of typhoid fever on August 18, 1863 at Port Hudson, LA. He was buried near the hospital in LA, but his remains were reinterred on December 29, 1863 and brought back to Berne.

*[[James Edgar Wood]] of Berne was a 20 year old Private of Company C when he died of chronic diarrhea and consumption on August 8, 1863 at Port Hudson, LA and was buried there.

*[[Jesse D. Wood]] of Berne was a 19 year old Private of Company C who died of disease on August 13, 1863 at Port Hudson, LA. His remains were retrieved by [[Morgan L. Filkins]] and brought back for burial at Berne.
