Birth

Daniel Van Deusen was born circa 1838 to Robert C. Van Deusen (B. Nov 5, 1798, D. May 17, 1853) and Catherine Bovie (B. May 2, 1802, D. after 1860).[1] He was one of seven children and had a younger brother William H. Van Deusen, who also served in the Civil War.

Occupation

He was a farm laborer living the home of his parents in the 1855 and 1860 census.[2][3]

Life

In 1850 Daniel was living with his parents and siblings in Berne.[4]

Five years later, Daniel was recorded at age 18 in the 1855 NY State Census as working as a farmer and living with his mother and younger siblings.[2] He continued to live with his mother and younger siblings in 1860 in Berne.[3]

Additional Remarks: Enlisted at the age of 25 to serve 9 months.[5]Daniel Van Deusen age 24, enlisted as a private on 2 Oct 1862, died of disease. Daniel's younger brother William H. Van Deusen served in the 177th Infantry Regiment and survived the war. Enlisted at the age of 25.[6]

Death

Daniel, while serving in the Civil War, died of disease at Port Hudson on June 18, 1863.

Additional Research Notes

There is an affidavit from Wm. Flansburgh and Daniel S. Van Deusen relating to Catherine Van Deusen's pension claim which attests that she was wife [widow] of Robert Van Deusen and mother of Daniel Van Deusen. It gives assignment info and says he died at Baton Rouge, LA. Date is not given, but affidavit is Jan 1864.[7]
