Theodora Haverly Deitz

Birth

Theodora N. Haverly was born on February 2, 1889 at West Berne, Albany County, NY. Her parents were William J. Haverly(1849-1930) and Carrie E. Naughright (1860-1960). Theodora grew up on the 170 acre Haverly farm on Rt. 443 in West Berne. She was the fourth of nine children to grow up on the farm that featured the breeding of road and trotting horses.

Education

She was educated. She attended the local school at West Berne. She was a devoted member of the Berne Reformed Church and Missionary Society.

Occupation

She was a Homemaker. Her husband, Fred Deitz, taught school a few years, before taking over the Berne Rural Free Delivery mail route in 1911. He was a supporter in starting the Berne-Knox Central School, and was secretary of the Board of Education many years, and then District Treasurer. Dora took over the job of District Treasurer after Fred died in 1950.

Marriage & Children

Dora married Frederick N. Deitz, son of Ellery Willes Deitz(1858-1914) and Carrie E. Warner(1858-1939), on June 25, 1908 at Gallupville, Schoharie County, NY. They had four children:

  • Margaret E. Deitz, who died in infancy at Town of Berne, Albany County, NY.
  • Harold F. Deitz was born on February 18, 1910 at Berne Village, Albany County, NY. He married Edith Mae Vining, daughter of Raymond Vining, on November 10, 1934 at Hensonville, NY. They had two children; Gail and James. He was an Electrician. He died on June 24, 1985 at Albany, Albany County, NY, at age 75. He was buried after June 24, 1985 at Woodlawn Cemetery, Berne, Albany County, NY.
  • Franklin S. Deitz was born on May 11, 1913 at Berne Village, Albany County, NY. He married Gertrude Marion Ball,daughter of Clyde L. Ball and Alta Sholtes Ball, on October 20, 1938. He was educated at Berne local schools, Schoharie H.S., Hope College in MI, and New Brunswick Theological Seminary in NJ. He was a Minister in the Reformed Church of America, serving at Prattsville, Second Reformed of Rotterdam, Lawyersville and Sharon Churches, retiring in 1975. He died on December 4, 1996 at St. Peter's Hospital, Albany, Albany County, NY.
  • Walter E. Deitz was born on May 19, 1916 at Berne Village, Albany County, NY. He was a Veteran of WWII, serving in the South Pacific. He married Anna Laura(Tugboat Annie)Shultes, daughter of Benjamin Shultes and Helen G. Bray, on December 31, 1938 at Prattsville, NY. He died on May 18, 1970 at Middleburg, Schoharie County, NY, at age 53.


Death

Theodora Haverly Deitz died on April 29, 1962 at Lawyersville Reformed Church parsonage, home of son Rev. Franklin Deitz, at age 73. She was buried after April 29, 1962 at Woodlawn Cemetery, Berne, Albany County, NY.
