Birth

Matthew St. John was born on June 27, 1754 at Cortlandt Manor, Westchester County, NY[1], a son of Job St. John and Sarah ______.[2] His known siblings were:

  • Noah St. John born in 1750, married Anna Lockwood[3]
  • Samuel St. John born about 1756, married Thankful Lockwood[3][2]
  • Adam St. John born in 1758, [2] his wife Martha gave an affidavit in support of Matthew’s pension application (see documents below)
  • Eunice St. John born 1760, married Thomas Kelsey[3]
  • Joseph St. John born 1763[3]

Military

Matthew enlisted at New Marlborough, Ulster Co., NY as a private in the militia under Captain Stephen Cane in Colonel Hasbrook’s Regiment on alarms, and from 1776 until the close of the war was called out to scout and guard at least once a month.

Marriage & Children

At Poundridge, Westchester County, NY on June 1, 1772, he married Jemima Pelham. Their children:

  • Sarah St. John born October 18, 1775, died August 4, 1776
  • Elizabeth St. John born July 24, 1777
  • Adam L. St. John born on January 12, 1780
  • Jane St. John born on July 10, 1782
  • Polly St. John born on July 20, 1784
  • Phebe St. John was born on January 4, 1791
  • Abbey St. John was born on October 11, 1793
  • Hester St. John was born on May 30, 1797
  • Weley St. John was born on May 23, 1800
  • Philena St. John was born on May 3, 1803
  • Philena Hartsant was born May 1, 1787. She was an adopted child.

Death

Matthew died on June 28, 1836 in Westerlo. Jemima survived him and received a widow’s pension for one year in 1837. No further claim was made.
