[Knox]--Howard A. Schoonmaker Sr., 80, of Pleasant Valley Road died May 8. Mr. Schoonmaker was born in Albany and lived most of his life in Berne. He attended Cornell University, the state university colleges at Brockport and Farmingdale, and Schenectady County Community College. He served with the Army Air Force's 389th Bomb Group in England during World War II and attained the rank of staff sergeant. Mr. Schoonmaker was also a member of the Berne Fire Co., the Helderberg Ambulance Squad, the Boy Scouts of America review board, the HelderbergKiwanis Club and AMVETS. He served on the Berne Zoning Board of Appeals and the Berne-Knox-Westerlo Board of Education, and was captain of the Berne fire police. He was a state hunting-safety instructor. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Sturgess Schoonmaker; a son, Howard A. Schoonmaker II of Albany; a daughter, Beth Ann Floro of Rochester; and four grandchildren. Services and burial were private.
