Howard was born February 22,1916 in Albany, New York. His parents were Roscoe C. Schoonmaker and Catherine Roney.

Howard attended Cornell University, the state university colleges at Brockport and Farmingdale, and Schenectady County Community College.

Marriage and Children

Howard married Dorothy Florence Sturgess (parents were Lewis Toles Sturgess and Jennie Crounse Lewis) on November 17, 1939. They had a son Howard A. Schoonmaker II and daughter Beth Ann Schoonmaker.

Occupation

Mr. Schoonmaker operated a sporting-goods store from his home for many years. He also was a self-employed farmer and carpenter. He was a vocational instructor for 17 years for the state division of Youth at Camp Cass in Rensselaerville.

[Knox]--Howard A. Schoonmaker Sr., 80, of Pleasant Valley Road died May 8. Mr. Schoonmaker was born in Albany and lived most of his life in Berne. He attended Cornell University, the state university colleges at Brockport and Farmingdale, and Schenectady County Community College. He served with the Army Air Force's 389th Bomb Group in England during World War II and attained the rank of staff sergeant. He was a member of the Berne Conservation Club, the Central Bridge Rod and Gun Club, the Cobleskill Pistol Team, the Berne Masonic Lodge, its past master's association, and Fellowcraft Club. Mr. Schoonmaker was also a member of the Berne Fire Co., the Helderberg Ambulance Squad, the Boy Scouts of America review board, the HelderbergKiwanis Club and AMVETS. He served on the Berne Zoning Board of Appeals and the Berne-Knox-Westerlo Board of Education, and was captain of the Berne fire police. He was a state hunting-safety instructor. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Sturgess Schoonmaker; a son, Howard A. Schoonmaker II of Albany; a daughter, Beth Ann Floro of Rochester; and four grandchildren. Services and burial were private.
