Birth

Johan Jacob Shultes (spelled Shultis by his signature on his pension file) was born on 12 May 1761 at probably, West Berne, Albany, NY. He was baptized at Schoharie Reformed Ch. His parents were Capt. Mathias Shultes and (Anna) Eva Engel, daughter of Anthony Engel and Juliana (unknown). He was one of eleven children. His siblings were:

Education

He was educated, and became a trustee of the framed schoolhouse across Rock Road from his farm in the 1830s. It was about 1830 this Shultes family of Rock Road changed the spelling of their name to Sholtes.

Occupation

He was a farmer on Lot 629 of 151 acres shown on the 1787 Van Rennselaer survey map. He drew a map of his farm abt. 1800 that shows the barn, the first house, the boundries with neighbors, and the school near his farm . He also was a Captain in the Revolutionary War along with his father Mathais and brother Mathias II. He served in the 15th Regiment of Albany County. He was garrisoned at the Old Stone Fort at Schoharie, NY. In 1832, at the age of 72 he applied for and recieved a pension under the Act of Congress for the allowed amount of $33.33 per annum.

Military

Jacob enlisted to serve in the Revolutionary War in Schoharie and served as a private for at least 9 months in 1776 and several in 1778 and 1779 under Capt. Bogart, Colonel John Harper and Capt. Mathias Shultes. He was honorably discharged.

Marriage & Children

Johan Jacob married Mary Fisher dau of Piter (Peter) Fisher and (Anna) Dorothea Ball, on 26 Feb 1786 at Schoharie Reformed Church, Schoharie, Albany (now Schoharie), NY. They had the following children:

  • Johannes James Sholtes -b.4 Dec 1786 at Knox, Albany, NY. He married Elizabeth (Betsy) Schoolcraft, dau of John Schoolcraft and Catherine Schell, in 1810 at Albany, NY. He died on 12 Apr 1858 at Town of Knox, Albany, NY, at age 71. He lived at 142 Rock Road, Town of Knox, Albany, NY where his father and family lived. He was a farmer. His children were Gedian Shultes and Jacob Sholtes.
  • Peter Sholtes -b. 4 Oct 1788 at Knox, Albany, NY.
  • Adam Shultes was born on 20 Jan 1794 at Knox, Albany, NY. He died in 1795 at Knox, Albany, NY.
  • Jacob Ira Shoultes -b. 7 Feb 1798 at Knox, Albany, NY. He married Elizabeth Isabell Liep, dau of George Frederick Leipe and Angelica Truax, in 1819 at Berne or Knox, Albany, NY. He died on 25 May 1858 at Newark Valley, Tioga County, NY, at age 60. He was buried after25 May 1858 at East Newark Cemetery, Newark Valley, Tioga, NY, he was a farmer.

Capt. Jacob Shultes's wife Mary Fisher was born circa 1759 at Beaver Dam (now Berne), Albany, NY. She was baptized on 1 Feb 1761 at Reformed Church, Schoharie, Schoharie, NY. She died on 22 Jun 1839 at Town of Knox, Albany, NY. She was buried at Beaverdam Cemetery, Berne, Albany NY.

Death

Capt. Johan Jacob Shultes died on 1 Feb 1852 at Knox, Albany, NY, at age 90. He was buried after 1 Feb 1852 at Beaverdam Cemetery, at Berne, Albany,NY.
