Jacob Sholtes

Birth

Jacob Sholtes was born on Jun 3, 1817 at 142 Rock Road, Knox, Albany, NY (Lot 629). His parents were Johannes James Scholtes (1786-1858) and Elizabeth "Betsy" Schoolcraft(1790- 1857). He had one sibling, brother, Gedion Sholtes (1811-1886). The will of their grandfather, Johan Jacob Sholtes (1761-1852) required Jacob to provide care and maintenance for Gedion. The will also gave the family farm to Jacob.

Education

Jacob was educated. He could read and write well.

Occupation

He was a farmer.He learned the trade of farming from his father and grandfather, and became the owner and operator of the farm as a young man.

Marriage & Children

Jacob Sholtes married first wife Mary Ann Haverly (Feb 22, 1824-Dec 22, 1847) in 1840. Her parents were Johan Jost Haverly and Catherine Dreisbeck. Jacob and Mary Ann had two children:

  • Catharine Elizabeth Sholtes (1842-1927) who married Dr. Issac Becker (1829-1914)on Feb 15, 1860 in Berne, Albany, NY. They lived in Gallupville,Schoharie, NY. They had no children. They were buried in Gallupville Cemetery, Gallupville, Schoharie, NY.
  • Theodore Sholtes(1845-1856).

Jacob married second wife Christina Weidman(1826-1849) on Dec 14, 1848 in Berne, Albany, NY. Her parents were David B. Weidman and Sophia Dominick. They had one child:

  • Christina Sholtes (1849-1869) who married George Henford Joslin on Jun 9, 1849 in Berne, Albany, NY. Christina Weidman Sholtes died in childbirth.

Jacob married third wife Angelica Schell (1828-1906), daughter of William N. Schell and Lena Campbell, on Oct 8, 1851 at the Lutheran Church, Town of Berne, Albany, NY. Jacob Sholtes and Angelica Schell had the following nine children:

Angelica Schell was born on May 28, 1828 at the Town of Wright, Schoharie, NY. She died on Nov 13, 1906 at the Town of Knox, Albany, NY. She was buried after Nov 13, 1906 at Beaverdam Cemetery, Town of Berne, Albany, Ny. She joined the Beaverdam Reformed Church on Sep 1, 1861, Town of Berne, Albany, NY. She and Jacob Sholtes appeared on the census of 1870 at the Town of Knox, Albany, NY. She appeared on the census of 1880 at the Town of Knox, Albany, NY. Angelica had somewhat extravagent taste. Shortly after they married, she asked Jacob for a larger house. He built for her the large, beautiful farmhouse by 1852 at the Rock Road farm to replace the older house. The new house still stands today. The farm and house are currently owned by Nicholas Tommell and wife. The farm was in the Sholtes family for 175 years, until 1958.
