Sholtes, Clifford
Birth
Clifford Sholtes was born at the Sholtes family farm on Rock Road, Town of Knox, Albany, NY on November 29, 1877. His parents were Stanton Sholtes (1856-1929) and Ida Gibbs (1859-1932). He was the oldest of seven children to live to adulthood.
Education
He was educated at the one room schoolhouse across Rock Rd. from the farm.
Occupation
Clifford was a farmer while living at the Sholtes family farm. After marriage, he moved to Guilderland Center, Town of Guilderland, Albany, NY. Here he worked for Dr. F. H. Hurst as long as his health allowed. He was a carpenter working in Albany in 1917. He served as Guilderland Town Clerk in the Town of Guilderland and committeeman in his own district. He was an active member of the Helderberg Reformed Church serving as elder and tresurer of the church for many years.
Marriage & Children
Clifford Sholtes married Retha M. Schoonmaker, daughter of Wesley Schoonmaker and Mary Hanes, on February 25, 1902 at Scotia, Schenectady County, NY. He and Retha appeared on the census of 1920 and 1930 at Town of Guilderland, Albany, NY. They lived in the house on the west corner of Rt. 146 and School Road in the center of town. They had the following children:
- Hazel Maude Sholtes-b.in Knox on Dec 16, 1902. She died in 1903.
- Clyde Alexis Sholtes-b. in Knox on July 11, 1904. He married Ida B. McClaine in Duanesburg, NY. They lived in Guilderland Ctr and had two children; Robert and Barbara. He died on Jan 21, 1997 at the Fireman's Home at Hudson, NY.
- Clara May Sholtes-b.in Knox on June 19, 1906. She married Frank M. Brate (1904-1988) on Oct. 1, 1936. He was from Reidsville, NY. They lived in Guilderland Ctr.,NY. They had no children. She worked for the NY Telephone Co. for many years. She died on Jan 16, 1991.
- Ester Ruth Sholtes-b. in Knox on Jan. 13, 1908. She married Leon George King on April 19, 1964. They lived in Guilderland Ctr.,NY. They had one child; David Lawrence King. She died on Apr 19, 1964.
- Florence Mildred Sholtes-b. in Guilderland on March 2, 1910. She died in Berne, NY. on Dec. 9, 1934.
- Violet Anna Sholtes-b. in Guilderland. Private.
Retha Schoonmaker Sholtes died Feb. 24, 1938. Clifford re-married to Mae Blessing (1893-Sep 28, 1980) after 1938.
Death
Clifford Sholtes died on April 4, 1947 at Guilderland Ctr., NY. He was buried at the Berne-Beaverdam Cemetery, Town of Berne, Albany County, NY.
