KNOX — Edward P. Schmitt will be remembered for his sense of humor and his generosity. He died at home, in his sleep, on Tuesday, July 3, 2012. He was 57.

“He will be sorely missed by his family and friends,” his family wrote in a tribute. “His incredible sense of humor and pure joy for life will be forever remembered.”

Mr. Schmitt was born April 2, 1955 in Islip, NY, to the late Robert Schmitt and Kathryn Higgins Schmitt. He graduated from Chatham High School and went on to the State University of New York College at Brockport to earn a bachelor’s degree. After college, he started a family in Knox, where he lived for the past 32 years.

“Ed was a man of many talents,” his family wrote. He had most recently worked at AFF in Guilderland, and part-time at Home Depot in Albany. He also volunteered his time with the Knox Youth Council, and was a longstanding member of the Knox Volunteer Fire Department. “Ed was a selfless man who found immense enjoyment in volunteering his time and knowledge to those who needed help,” his family wrote. “In the true spirit of his selflessness, his organs have been donated to helping those in need.”

Mr. Schmitt is survived by his wife and best friend, Edie Schmitt, of Knox; his daughter, Sarah Pasquini, of Knox; his son, Kristopher Schmitt, and his wife, Christine, of Lagrange, N.Y.; and his son, Matthew Schmitt, and his wife, Mary, of Schodack. He is also survived by several stepchildren: Amy and Chris Matthews of Germany; Sara and Patrick Riniker of Nampa, Idaho; Katie and Nick Carollo of West Warwick, R.I.; Aaron and Amber Sleichter of San Jose, Calif.

He is survived, too, by his sister, Patricia Bassette; and his brother, Bob Schmitt, and his wife, Lynn.

Also surviving are his beloved grandchildren: Abigail and Madison Pasquini; Collin Schmitt; Saoirse, Isobel, and Maren Matthews; Samantha, Jack, Matthew, Hannah, Isaac and Evelyn Riniker; and Dominic and Jordan Carollo; as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends that he loved dearly.

Friends and family called at the Fredendall Funeral Home in Altamont on Friday, July 6, 2012. A funeral service was held in the morning of Saturday, July 7 at St. Lucy’s Church in Altamont, followed by interment in Knox Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross of North Eastern New York, 33 Everett Road, Albany, NY 12205.
