Montgomery County so on this twelfth day of March A.D. one thousand eight hundred thirty nine personally appeared before the court of General Sessions of the peace in & for the county of Montgomery aforesaid Peter Young of Canajoharie in said county aged seventy-seven or seventy-eight years who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath doth make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provisions made by the act of congress passed June 7th one thousand eight hundred and thirty two + the several acts passed subsequent thereto. That he entered the service of the United States at the age of sixteen in the year 1777 or 1778 this applicant can not recollect which in the spring of the year at the time ?? went off under Capt. Mathias Shultys who is now dead and served under him for three summer seasons from the time the snow went off till it fell again in the winter being about nine months each year. The service was performed at a ??? fort in the town of Berne county of Albany guarding against the Indians British and Tories the said applicant said that he does not remember any other commissioned officers belonging to the company besides the Captain Shultys. The name of the sargeant who ??? guard was John Warner who lately resided in the County of Albany but is now dead.
