Paul Quay was born in Knox, Albany County, NY[1] on July 30, 1841[2][3] to John Jacob Quay (B. June 16, 1810, D. May 15, 1880) and his wife Elizabeth (B. Feb 5, 1817, D. abt 1849).[4][5] His mother's maiden name has been recorded both as Timmer or Zimmer[4] and as Hanes[5]. Paul was the oldest boy in a family of six and he had a younger brother John Minor Quay.[1][5] Paul's mother died when he was eight years old and his father later married Emily M.
