Herbert was born in Knox[1] on March 3, 1912.[2] He was the son of Frank and Edith Quay. His brothers were:

Mr. Quay married Virginia Nobles (April 30, 1917 - October 21, 2004) on March 24, 1946 and they had four daughters--Winona, Sandra, Judith and Cynthia Quay; and a son, Roger E. Quay.

Mr. Quay worked for the General Electric Co. for 32 years, retiring in 1974 as a group leader in a powerhouse. Many years ago, he worked for the Albany County Highway Department. Mr. and Mrs. E. V. Nobles of Ludlowville have announced the marriage of their daughter, Miss Virginia Nobles, to Herbert Quay, son of Mrs. Edith Nash, Knox, of March 24 (1946) in the Ludlowville Methodist church. Rev. Frank J. Holmes performed the candlelight ceremony.

The bride given in marriage by her father, wore white marquisette and lace over satin and a coronet of pearls with a full length veil. She carried a shower bouquet of white roses and snapdragons.
