Birth

Edwin R. McNary, who was also recorded as Edward, was born between December 5, 1844 and December 5, 1845 in Berne to Elijah McNary (B. abt 1817, D. 1896) and Sally Martha Barton (B. abt 1817, D. abt 1869).[1] He was one of eight children.[1]

Edwin was a farmer and a carpenter.

Marriage & Children

On November 20, 1867 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Berne, Edwin married Elizabeth Esther Wagoner (b. June 17, 1843, d. Nov 8, 1906), who was the daughter of William Wagoner and Margaret Schermerhorn.[1] They had only one child; Margaret McNary (b. Sept 29, 1868, d. 1908).[1]

Additional Remarks: Enlisted at the age of 19 to serve one year. Also borne as Edward[2] Edwin, who was listed as Edward in the 1890 US Veterans Census, recorded that he had no disability as a result of his service. Town and City Registers has Edwin also listed in Albany with the statement “Discharged June 13, 1865. Engagements Petersburg and present at the surrender of Lee".

Life

Edwin McNary lived in the village of East Berne where he owned his own home.[4] He worked as a farmer and also as a carpenter to support his family.[4] Edwin was a Lutheran and attended St. Paul's Lutheran Church, and politically was a Democrat.[5] In 1880 his father Elijah lived with Edwin and his family in the Town of Bethlehem.[4]

Death

Edwin's wife Eliza died on November 8, 1906 and she was buried at the Knox Cemetery in Knox.[1] Edwin died just over a year later on Thursday January 2, 1908 and he was buried with his wife at Knox Cemetery.[1][5] Their daughter Margaret, who never married, also died in 1908.[1]

EAST BERNE Edward McNary, an old and respected resident of our community, passed away Thursday morning, Jan 2nd. He had been in poor health for some time but not until he fell in the woods recently and injured himself was his illness considered fatal. Mr. McNary was a veteran of the Civil War and had made his home in this vicinity for many years. He was a member of the Lutheran Church of this village, a staunch Democrat and a kind friend and good neighbor to all. The funeral was held at his late home in the village, Saturday afternoon at 1 o’clock. Rev. DeGraaf, of Berne, preached the sermon. Interment at Knox. Mr. McNary’s wife died about a year ago and he leaves one daughter, two brothers, and many friends to mourn his loss.
