Birth

Nelson Mattice was born on January 1, 1845 to Bartholomew B. Mattice (B. 1822, D. April 2, 1872) and Harriet Schermerhorn (B. 1827, D. Mar 19, 1905).[1] He was the oldest of ten children.[1] His siblings were: the son of Bartholomew B. Mattice and Harriet Schermerhorn. His siblings were:[2]

Marriage & Children

Nelson Mattice married after he served in the Civil War in June of 1870, Rachael Monroe (B. 1852, D. unk), whose parents are unknown.[1][3]

Nelson and Rachael had the following children:

  • Frank Mattice (B. Mar 8, 1871, D. July 4, 1928)[1]
  • Ida Grace Mattice (B. 1872, D. 1897)[1]
  • Harriet Mattice (B. 1878, D. 1900)[1]

Additional Remarks: Nelson enlisted at the age of 17. Aka Melvin. His younger brother Edward Mattice (B. 1847, D. 1929) also served in Co D of the 7th Heavy Artillery Regt. Nelson as the oldest enlisted first on July 28, 1862 and Edward followed on Jan 25, 1864. Both brothers mustered out within days of one another. Nelson had a disability as a result of the war which was described as "gravel of the lungs".

Life

Nelson moved to Broome County, NY by August 1870.[3] In the 1870 and 1880 Censuses, he was recorded as a farmer in Chenango, Broome County, NY.[3][4] His wife Rachael died before 1900 and in by 1890 he was living at 18 Cedar Street in Binghamton with his son Frank Mattice.[7][8] In the 1900 Census, Nelson was still living with his son Frank Mattice, a postal clerk, and his wife in Binghamton at 18 Cedar Street.[7][8]


Death

Nelson Mattice died in 1918 in Binghamton, Broome County, NY.[1] His wife Rachael had died previously between 1880 and 1900 in Broome County, NY.[4][8] Both are buried at the Floral Park Cemetery, Johnson City, Broome Co., NY
