Birth

Jacob Laraway was born in 1765, he was christened on June 23, 1765 at the Catskill Reformed Church in Catskill, Greene Co., NY, a son of Jonas Laraway and Elizabeth Muller. They lived at Beaverdam at the outbreak of the Revolutionary War. The parents left this country and went to Canada. Jacob’s siblings were:

  • Peter Laraway b. 1755 in Schoharie, died before 1767
  • Abraham Laraway b. 1757 in Greene County
  • Nicholas Laraway b. 1759 in Schoharie County
  • Isaac Laraway b. 1761 married Maria Post
  • Dorothea Laraway b. 1763 married Harmanus Truax
  • Peter Laraway b. 1767 married Elizabeth Smith
  • David Laraway b. 1770

Military

While a resident of Beaver Dam, Albany County, New York, Jacob Laraway enlisted in the spring of 1781, and served nine months as a private in Captains George Pierson’s, Benjamin Dubois’, and Joseph Harrison’s companies, Colonel Marinus Willett’s New York Regiment. He then enlisted and served about 1 year as a private in Cabtain William Dietz’s Company, Colonel Peter Vroman’s New York Regiment.

Marriage and Children

On November 24, 1785 Jacob married at the Schenectady Reformed Church in Schenectady, NY, Elizabeth Murray who was born in 1766 at Schenectady, a daughter of Thomas Murray and Maria Adams Truax. They had the following children:

  • Peter Laraway b. Apr 16, 1790
  • Elizabeth Laraway b. Apr 23, 1792
  • Annatje (Nancy) Laraway b. Dec 7, 1793
  • Jonas Laraway b. Sept 17, 1795
  • Thomas J. Laraway b. Apr 17, 1797
  • Eva Ann Laraway b. July 7, 1799 married James Sigsbee

Death

Jacob died on February 26, 1847, Elizabeth died on June 14, 1857.
