John Wilday Jr. was born in Berne, Albany County, NY. His birth date has been recorded from March 17, 1820 or March 17, 1821. He was the son of Johannes Wilday (B. April 7, 1789, D. 1873) and Margaret Ecker (B. Oct 28, 1794, D. Dec 25, 1861). He was on in a family of eight and had a younger brother named John Jost Wilday, which can cause confusion.

In the 1850 US Census John was recorded living in Berne with his wife and young family and working as a farmer. The same was true a decade later. John has not been found in the 1870 or 1880 US Censuses. John applied for his Civil War pension on March 23, 1887.
By 1890, John was residing in Wright, Schoharie County, NY where he was recorded in the US Veterans Census. This record confirms his military record and adds that he was wounded in the right leg and was living at Shutters Corners. At the time his discharge papers were not available to provide specific dates.
In 1900 John was living by himself next store to his son Merenious Wilday and his family in Schoharie, Schoharie County, NY. John was recorded as follows: born March 1816, 84 yrs old, farm laborer, rents house.
John's wife Maria apparently died first and then John died on November 5, 1900 in Middleburgh, Schoharie County, NY. He was buried in Berne.
