Johan Jost Kniskern was born on September 17, 1775, a son of Henrich P. Kniskern and Eva Schaeffer[1]. His known siblings were:
- Christian Kniskern b. in Schoharie on February 16, 1764[1]
- Maria Kniskern born in Schoharie on June 30, 1765[1]
- David Kniskern b. in Schoharie on March 27, 1767[1]

- Elizabeth Kniskern b. January 9, 1778[1]
- Katherine Kniskern b. April 15, 1781[1]
Marriage & Children
In 1796, he married Elizabeth Engle who was born in Berne on January 10, 1779, a daughter of Peter Engel and Sarah Warner[1]. Their known children were:
- Eve E. Kniskern b. December 8, 1800 in what is now called Knox, married Peter Ball[1]
- Anita Kniskern b. March 2, 1802 in what is now called Knox[1] Was not named in her father’s will.
- Jacob Kniskern b. December 3, 1803 in what is now called Knox, married Catherine E. Haverly[1]
- Joseph Kniskern b. April 10, 1810 in what is now called Knox, married Emily Williams[1]
Death
Johan Jost Kniskern died on June 11, 1813 and was buried at the Berne and Beaverdam Cemetery in Berne. Elizabeth died on November 4, 1863 and was buried beside her husband. [1]
