He married at about 1869 in Wisconsin, Amanda Hamilton, who was born in Kansas in 1847 and moved to Nebraska. They had the following known children:

- Agnes H. Warner
Joel was a teacher at the time of his enlistment. He later became a minister.

|Additional Remarks: Enlisted at the age of 23 to serve 3 years. According to the 1890 Beaver, Boone Co. Nebraska census, Joel was injured in the eyes during the war and he was a sargeant.

Amanda died in 1923. Joel died in 1925. Both are buried at the Hooper Cemetery, Hooper, Dodge Co., Nebraska.
