James was born on July 16, 1933, in Westerlo to Arthur J. Slingerland and Cora Mabel Stewart.

He attended Berne-Knox-Westerlo Central school.

James worked for Albany Asphalt in Albany, N.Y. until his retirement.

Marriage & Children

On August 18, 1956, James married Delores Ann Duell, a daughter of Herbert H. Duell and Doris F. Applebee at the St. John's Lutheran Church in East Berne. They had six children:

James and Delores divorced, and on November 19, 1966, he married Shirley Jeane Tallman, daughter of Edgar Lewis Tallman and Roberta Mae Cook. They had two children:

  • William Joseph Slingerland

Death

He died on May 11, 2008, at his home in Westerlo at 74 years of age. He was buried on June 6, in Saratoga National Cemetery in Saratoga, N.Y..

WESTERLO, N.Y. James S. Slingerland, 74 years, of Westerlo, passed away at his home on May 11, 2008. He was born in Albany, N.Y. on July 16, 1933, son of the late Arthur J. and Mabel C. (Stewart) Slingerland. James was a mechanic for Albany Asphalt until his retirement. He was a member of Teamsters Local #294 in Albany. He enjoyed rebuilding tractors and loved playing cards. James also loved to stop for coffee in the local coffee shops. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Ronald Slingerland. Surviving are his wife, Shirley (Tallman) Slingerland of Westerlo; six sons, James M. Slingerland, William J. Slingerland, Kenneth Slingerland, Scott Slingerland, Ronald Slingerland and Michael Slingerland; two daughters, Laura Slingerland-Casey and Traci Slingerland-Lee; 20 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Norma D'Alfonsi and Joan McDermott; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be Thursday at 8 p.m. at the So. Westerlo, C.C. Church. Friends may call at the church prior to the service from 6 to 8 p.m.
