Birth

Wendell S. Hiltsley was born March 9, 1913, in Knox, son of the late Arthur Hiltsley and Edith Dexter Hiltsley.

Education

Wendell Hiltsley was trained for the ministry at the the Practical Bible Training School in Bible School Park (Broome County) received his bachelor's degree from SUNY Oneonta, and his master's degree from SUNY Albany.

Occupation

Wendell S. Hiltsley was ordained to the ministry in Preston Hollow in 1940 and served both his first and last pastorates in Greenville Center Baptist Church. He was also an educator, and served as elementary school teacher, guidance counselor, or principal in various school districts, including Greenville and Schoharie. He also worked in the Capital Christian Academy and other Christian schools. He and his wife started Christian schools in Washington D.C., Michigan, and Syracuse.

Rev. Hiltsley was married Aug. 8, 1943, to Hazel Elizabeth Gardiner, who died Aug, 26, 1995. Their children were:

  • Rev. Thomas Hiltsley of Springfield, Vt.
  • Betty Aucompaugh of Pattersonville (Schenectady Co.)

Death

WINDSOR, Vt. The Rev. Wendell S. Hiltsley, 85, died July 15 (1998) at the Cedar Hill Health Care Center in Windsor, Vt.

Rey. Hiltsley was born March 9, 1913, in Knox, son of the late Arthur Hiltsley and Edith Dexter Hiltsley. Rev. Hiltsley was married Aug. 8, 1943, to Hazel Elizabeth Gardiner, who died Aug, 26, 1995.

"Dad loved to preach," said his daughter, Betty Aucompaugh. "He preached in a whole lot of churches, not as a full-time preacher, but as a supply preacher. That was what consumed his life, making sure people knew the Lord. Dad was very mujch consumed by the second coming of Christ. He preached on it a lot, and felt, that people were not gearing their lives to the fact Christ was coming again.

"He could fix anything," Mrs. Aucompaugh continued. "He invented all kinds of stuff. When we were little, he invented a baby carriage that would go in either direction, and he made car beds for us kids that stacked, one on top of the other.

Survivors include one son, the Rev. Thomas Hiltsley of Springfield, Vt.; one daughter, Betty Aucompaugh of Pattersonville (Schenectady Co.); four grandchildren — Darcy and Derek Aucompaugh, and Heather and Wendell Hiltsley; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were Monday at the First Baptist Church in Westerlo. Arrangements are by Fredendall Funeral Home in Altamont. Burial was VanVechten Cemetery in Pattersonville.
