Birth

John was born in Guilderland, Albany Co., NY at about 1768, he was christened at the Dutch Reformed Church in Albany on January 15, 1768, he was a son of Jan Groot and Engeltje Van Patten. His father was a Captain in the 3rd Regiment in Revolutionary War and the home where Jan and his family lived in Guilderland (now Altamont) is a historic site where both Jan and his mother are buried. Marriage & Children

On December 25, 1793 he married Elsje Elenor Van Benscotten who was born at about 1777. [1] Their children:

  • John Groot born December 23, 1795[1]. He died in 1813 in Knox[2]
  • Solomon Groot born May 16, 1798[1], he married Elizabeth Saddlemire[2]
  • Arent Groot born September 26, 1800[1], married Eva Saddlemire[2]
  • Margareta Groot born September 12, 1802[1], married John Van Auken[2]
  • Sophia Groot born August 12, 1805[1] no further record
  • Sarah Groot born March 5, 1807[1], married John Saddlemire[2]
  • Philip Groot born June 30, 1809[1], married Mahala Saddlemire[2]
  • Mariah Groot born December 1, 1811[1], she died in October of 1843. [2]
  • John I. Groot born May 20, 1814[1], married Eliza Quackenbush[2]
  • Peter Freeman Groot born October 15, 1816[1], married Lucinda Button[2]
  • Abner Groot born March 11, 1820[1], no further record

Death

John died on October 10, 1831 in Knox. Elsje died on December 18, 1853 in Knox. They are buried in their private burial ground in Knox. [2]

John’s Will

His Daughter, Mariah’s Will

She names her surviving siblings and where they were living when she wrote her will. Unlike in her father’s will, the name of her mother was given as Elenor.
