James D. Gifford was born May 18, 1887, in Berne to Albert W. Gifford and Mary Hope Fox. [1][2]

He served in the Navy during World War I.

Marriage & Children

On February 7, 1923, James married Nina Filkins, (1903-1976), daughter of Benjamin Filkins and Iva Becker. [1] They had the following children:

  • Daisy Mae Gifford[1]
  • Clinton Gifford[1]

Death

He died March 25, 1978, in Rensselaerville at 90 years of age. He was buried in Rensselaerville Cemetery. [1]

Obituary

Published in The Altamont Enterprise (Altamont, NY), April 7, 1978 James Gifford, 90, died at his home in Rensselaerville last Saturday, March 25. Born in Berne, May 18, 1887, the son of the late Albert and Mary Hope Gifford, he served in the Navy during World War I and was a member of the Clark White American Legion Post, whose officers and members conducted a service at the Cunningham Funeral Home in Greenville Tuesday evening. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Carl (Daisy) Schanz of Middleburgh; a son, Clinton Gifford of Rensselaerville, and 10 grand-children. Services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Cunningham Funeral Home, with Rev. Richard B. Clark, pastor of the Trinity Episcopal Church, Rensselaerville, officiating. Interment will be in Rensselaerville Cemetery.
