Birth

Marjorie Esther Gallup was born in a farmhouse in Knox on December 11, 1914,, the daughter of Elon Gallup (1 AUG 1887 - NOV 1971) and Fannie Anna Skinner (NOV 1892 - 28 APR 1939) the daughter of William C. Skinner. Elon also married Marion Long (24 APR 1901 - 30 APR 1974).[1]

Education

She attended a one room schoolhouse in Knox and spent her first two years of high school in Bethlehem.

Mrs. Garry lived with a family and took care of their children to secure tuition to the high school in Bethlehem, said Mr. Garry. Knox did not have a high school at the time.

During the last two years of high school, she attended Schoharie High School, which required a 20-mile journey from her family's home in Knox, Mr. Garry said. She was the valedictorian of her class, graduating with a 98.4 average.

Occupation

She worked for a roofing company in Albany before marrying Francis J. Garry on Dec. 26, 1937.

Mr. and Mrs. Garry ran a service station in Milford, Pa. in 1940 and then moved to Bloomfield, N.J.

They moved to East Berne in 1942, and purchased a dairy farm, originally part of the Van Rensselaer estate, which the couple operated until 1955.

The couple then ran a maintenance business until Mr. Garry died in 1965.

Mrs. Garry worked for the state's Department of Transportation as a traffic planner until her retirement in 1982.

Marjorie Gallup Garry

Marjorie Garry, who had a quick mind and able hands, died on Wednesday, June 18, (2003) at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany after a short illness.

"She was an excellent mom," said her son, John D. Garry of Galway. "She was caring, never wanting to impose on anyone." Mrs. Garry was born in a farmhouse in Knox on Dec. 11, 1914, the daughter of Elon and Fannie (Skinner) Gallup. She was devoted to her grandsons, said her son. She was an excellent baker and seamstress and enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and quilting. In later years, she enjoyed shopping for antiques and restoring furniture which she sold at Cater's Flea Market on Route 443 near West Berne. She lived at the Guilderland Center Nursing Home prior to her death. She was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in East Berne.

In addition to her son, she is survived by a daughter-in-law, Letitia (Dovhan), of Galway; two grandsons, Robert S. Garry and his wife, Christine (Modafferi), of Delmar, and Steven J . Garry of Holly Springs, N.C.; and two great-grandchildren, Hannah B. Garry and Eve A. Garry of Delmar.

A funeral service was held Monday at the Fredendall Funeral Home in Altamont. She is being buried in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Berne.
