Birth

John Tyler Finehout was born on June 19, 1840 to Isaac M. Finehout (B. abt 1800, D. abt 1855) and Sarah Wheeler (B. abt 1799, M. abt 1819, D. after 1860).[1][2][3][4] He had an older brother named William Henry Finehout (B. April 25, 1828 or 1827)[2][3] and an older sister Amanda Finehout (B. abt 1838)[3][4]. Their surname was also been spelled Fineout.

Life

John was born in 1840, in 1850 he was living with his parents, older brother William and older sister Amanda in New Scotland, Albany County, NY.[3] His father Isaac died within the next decade and in 1860 John was recorded in the US Census twice.[4] The first time he was recorded living in Westerlo with his widowed mother Sarah and sister Amanda, and was recorded as working as a farm laborer.[4] The second time he was recorded as living in Westerlo with the family of George Wheeler, who was a farmer and working as a farm laborer.[4] His sister Amanda was also recorded two times. On October 15, 1862 John enlisted in Company H of the 177th NY Infantry with his brother William. They served together until they both mustered out on September 10, 1863. During their service, John was shot in the face and William was shot in the right leg, but both survived and returned to Westerlo where they would live for the remainder of their lives.[11][5] After the war on July 4, 1866 in Dormansville, John married Sara M. White (B. April 1845, D. Nov 10, 1916).[1] They were recorded in the 1870 with their young son John, living in Westerlo where John was working as a day laborer.[7] By the 1880 US Census, their family had grown to include their daughter Ida Jane.[8] John was working as a laborer.[8] On August 5, 1889, John filed for an invalid pension based on his Civil War service. In 1890, John and his brother William were both recorded in the US Veterans Census living in Westerlo. In that record John recorded that he had been shot in the face. The 1900 US Census recorded John as a farmer who owned his own farm.[6] John and Sarah were living alone.[6]

Physical Appearance

John was said to have dark hair and grey eyes.[1]

Death

On October 23, 1902, John would die.[1] After his death, his wife Sarah would file for his Civil War Pension.[10] John was only sixty two years of age.
