Birth

Richard was born on December 7, 1781[1] in Vermont[2], the son of Isaac Filkins and Sarah Langdon [1]

His life

He came to Berne with his parents about 1792, and later settled in the eastern part of the town on a farm of 200 acres. [2]

Occupation

He was a farmer and he owned and operated a saw mill. [2]

Military

He was a soldier in the War of 1812, filling the office of Sargeant. [2]

Marriage & Children

He was married twice, and by his first wife six children were born. His second wife was Catharine Angel and to this union were born fourteen children, eight sons growing to maturity. [2]
Richard married first, Nancy Crabb who was born on August 2, 1783. Their marriage took place before 1801. [1]
Their children:

  • Eliza Filkins, born March 30, 1801, died in 1865[1]
  • Julia Filkins, born about 1803 died before 1841[1]
  • Joseph Filkins, born July 4, 1805, died in 1857[1]
  • Hannah Filkins, born August 14, 1808[1]
  • John B. Filkins, born February 26, 1810 and died in 1854. [1]
  • Richard Filkins, born March 26, 1814[1]

Richard married secondly on July 11, 1814, Catherine Angle born April 22, 1791, a daughter of Daniel Angle and Catherine Becker. [1]

  • George Filkins, born August 26, 1815 and died May 10, 1900. [1]
  • Alanson Filkins, born 1816 and died 1816. [1]
  • Daniel C. Filkins, born November 2, 1816 and died December 19, 1872[1]
  • Elvira Marie Filkins, born May 7, 1819 and died August 1, 1881. [1]
